Bill Hawkins is a young man who, in 1990, was involved in a serious car accident. Bill was on his way home on leave from the Royal Australian Navy when the accident occurred. He was 19 years of age & enjoyed surfing, scuba diving, music & fishing. Bill had been in the Navy for 12 months prior to the accident and was very proud of his job.
As a result of the accident Bill was in a coma for several months, having received a severe brain injury. Bill’s family, their friends & helpers carried out movement therapy and he slowly came out of the coma to what is known as a ‘locked-in’ state.
Since Bill has been well enough to live at home, a group of volunteers have been visiting him to assist with his daily exercise regime. These exercises prevent Bill’s muscles from wasting, maintain his ongoing well-being and give him a chance at independent movement. Although unable to speak, Bill is now capable of limited independent movement. Bill lives at home with his Mum & Dad (Lindy & Jim – a truly amazing couple!!)
